Master's Love Cannot Be Lost

 

Long, long time ago in India, there was a master. He, of course, had many disciples. One of the disciple was a high ranking government official; he came quietly to learn and did not let other people know that he was the disciple of that master. Some people like to come here quietly to learn with Me, too. Afraid of the turbulent environment outside, they dare not make it public. All right, it doesn't matter. Whether you come quietly or openly, I will teach all the same. Don't think that I am hinting something to you! I am just telling a previous story. That high ranking official came quietly and dared not tell others, being afraid that it might affect his status. He was a very high official and governed a very large area of land.

Every time he went to see his master, it was done in secret. He did not allow his attendants to follow him and he usually went quietly, at a very late hour when there were no other people. Whatever advice he asked from the master was done very quietly, in the very early morning or very late in the evening. This did not matter too much and his master was not bothered by it. One day, a fellow practitioner also came very late to see the master and accidentally saw the official. The fellow practitioner was a very simple-minded person. Therefore, he said happily, "You also learn from Master. Oh! It's really fantastic! Congratulations! And he enthusiastically greeted him.

This fellow practitioner was a nobody. He was very poor and had a low status in society. Some days later he met the high official outside. He then shouted, "Brother! He called to the high official in front of the public, "Oh, brother! How are you? Very happy to see you. Do you remember me? We had tea together the other day at Master's place. Remember? The high official took a glance at him and said, "Who is your brother, huh!? (Master imitates the high official's expression.) (Audience laughs and applauds.) Then he asked his attendants to take him away. The young brother was very upset. Why was he like this!? He didn't understand! He then cried sadly and went home to tell his master, "Master, that brother was very harsh. When I saw him, I was very happy and called him 'brother'. But he told his attendants to take me away. Boo-hoo... (Master and audience laugh.)

"Ayeh! Ah! His master was not happy upon hearing that. Really! He was not happy. The high official was more concerned about his reputation than the honor of the master-disciple relationship! Therefore, his master was very angry and said to the other disciples that when the high official comes, he is not allowed to enter the door from that time onwards. From that day on, the master-disciple relationship between him and the high official was cut. When the high official came later, everyone did not allow him to go in. Then he had to go home! It was when he was at home that he felt very hurt. After initiation, we have a very deep emotional link with the master. There's an inside communication system, we communicate very clearly. That's why we love the master so much. It is our feeling that the master is one with us that our level would be raised. Because our master is high and we are one with him, then we would be raised somewhat. Then we feel liberated from the complicated mundane world. Worries and pain become less. Even if there is pain, we can bear it! We can also tolerate and be happy naturally. However, when the relationship with the master is cut, the system is also cut off immediately. We fall down just like an ordinary person. Inside, there is no spiritual food to replenish. Everyday, there is no food for the soul - the replenishing food transmitted from the master's heart for the soul - therefore, it is very, very sad. It was at that time that he understood everything was totally different. Suddenly, everything was not the same! Very lonely, very much in pain, without any energy; and he had lost every happy circumstance, because there was no more food to eat! Just like if we did not have food to eat daily, the whole person would be different! Then he knew he was in error. He felt very sorry, very very sorry. He yearned very much to regain the previous happy realm with a relaxed and secure feeling and the feeling that someone is loving us very much. Now, there was nothing! He felt very much in pain, lonely and very much wanted to see master again; but he couldn't. He could not see from the outside. Even in the inside there was no more communication. Cut!

When the master said cut, then it was cut; because it was transmitted from heart to heart without form. Although there was no physical form, it did really exist. Therefore, when his master wanted to give, he could give; and when he wanted to take it back, he could take back. Very simple, like this one with the physical form. If the master wanted to give you, he could do so, isn't it right? If I want to take it back, then I can take it back, understand? The things without form are also that simple. To give, then I give. To take, then I take. Therefore, when you have initiation, you get the gift of enlightenment as a kind of gift of first meeting each other! Just coming for initiation then you get the gift; the master has given you something. If it happened that he wanted to take it back, he could also do so very quickly, no problem. Therefore, the high official was in great pain. He realized then that the loving power of Master was the most precious thing in the world. It was incomparable. He was in great pain and did not want to be a government official. He resigned and went home. He thought of all sorts of ways to get back the level and loving atmosphere that this master had given him before, when he was being loved by the master. He wanted to get back that loving power. He was very ashamed and regretful. But whatever he tried, it was no use. Even when he meditated more, it was no use. Now, there was no more light in the meditation, no sound, nothing! Very dry. He returned back to what it was like when he was an ordinary person, doing meditation casually. There was no consolation, no result. Oh, very painful!

After thinking for a long time then he thought of a way. He knew that on the day of his master's birthday, there would be a lot of people coming to dance, sing, and to celebrate. Then, he went to find a particular professional dancing group. There was a very rich boss who would hire this group to dance for his master on his birthday. At that time, that dancing group was the most famous one in India. They knew how to dance very well and were the most beautiful and most talented. Therefore, that rich person would certainly hire that group to dance for his master to enjoy. After knowing this, the high official went to make friends with those dancers. Through them, with a lot of money and precious things, he bribed the group leader, "You teach me how to dance and how to sing!? I very much want to learn. He was very sincere and went there everyday to ask the leader to teach him dancing. Because he was so sincere, very respectful to the leader "master became a very good disciple, went everyday to wash the group leader's feet, and ceremonially requested her as his teacher, the group leader was very touched and taught him all the secret techniques. After learning for a year, he learned all the secrets and danced just like them. No one could see that he was not one of the group.

The group leader was very touched, being moved by his sincerity. The high official was very respectful to her since he wanted to learn well. He was really a very good disciple. Before, he was not that good of a disciple to his master. Now, he became a very good disciple. Learning to dance everyday, he studied for more than a year's time. On the day of his master's birthday, he said to the group leader, "I want to replace one of your disciples to dance today, may I? The group leader of course said yes and told a disciple to rest.

The high official put on make-up inside, alone and dressed like a woman. The dress and everything was very beautiful. He danced along with the group. He danced and sang for his master. He was very sincere in his singing, expressing the pain of his inner struggle. Everyone was very touched. His master knew immediately once he heard his voice, a very sorrowful singing. He understood immediately and even could not bear it. Being unable to bear it, he quickly came down from the stage to embrace him.

The whole audience was watching this. (Audience laughs.) You know what sort of expression they had, "Oh, Master was embracing a woman! They were shocked! Everything came to a standstill. The whole atmosphere was very quiet. His master said, "You quickly change your clothes and let everyone know who you are. Then, everyone knew that he was that high official. From that day onwards, his master forgave him and allowed him to be a disciple again. Then he finally became happy again! If we never got hold of a bit of that love, then we would not know what it is and we would not try to remember it. Losing it after getting it, ayeh ah! Very painful, very painful. Isn't it like that?
